And here´s how we made the cowboy out of the boy...

Esto es como hicimos un disfraz de cowboy...

We already had the felt boots from a donated Puss in Boots outfit.  On gold card I cut out two star shapes and two long strips, these were then stapled and glued into place.  Easy peasy cowboy boots with spurs!

Las botas de filtro ya las teniamos (de un disfraz de Gato con botas).  Con cartulina corté dos estrellas y dos rectànulos largos, les fijé con grapadora y cola.  Super botas, super facil.

The cowboy hat, jacket and neckerchief were all "models own".  We shaded in a beard and mono-eyebrow for extra meaness.

El sombrero, chaqueta y pañuelo eran todos de la modelo!  Con pintura de cara, pintamos una barba y una ceja-unica para darlé mas carácter al personaje.

And not forgeting the Sheriffs badge.  Another gold card cut out with a safety pin sellotaped to the back.
Y por último la estrella de sheriff. Recortada de una cartulina dorada y con un imperdible detrás sujeto con celo para poder prenderla del pecho del vaquero más pendenciero.

And that's how I got making our very own hobby horse.

100 Acre wood - Recreated!

Winnie The Pooh is a favourite in our house, and Croc loves acting out the stories we read, so it wasn´t long before we made a One Hundred Acre Wood play scene.

Winnie The Pooh es un gran favourito en casa y a  Croc le encanta recrear los historias que leemos.  Asi que no tardó  mucho en hacer El Bosque de 100 Hectares!!!

It was a really creative play session.  Croc was completely in charge taking out all the different teddies and blocks he wanted.  (I did make him the hunny Tree - just my little part!).  He even chose specific scenes from the book to "play-out"

Era un juego muy creativo.  Croc estaba completamente al mando sacando todos sus ositos y bloques.  (Bueno, yo  le hice el arbol de miel).  Incluso escogió algunas escenas del cuento para recrear.

Little Boo doesn´t know or love Pooh quite as much as her big brother but she loved playing in this multi-sensory play scene.

La Peque Boo no conoce ni  ama a Pooh tanto como su hermano, pero si que disfruto jugando en este espacio multi-sensorial.

Small World Space Play

Following on from the cardboard toy rocket we made last week,  I set up a small world space play!

Despues de la cohete de carton pequeño hicimos la semena pasado, preparé un pequeno mundo espacial !

I got thinking about Croc and Boo´s favourite play things.  They are (in no particular order) cardboard boxes, sticks, small toy animals water and mud.

Pensando sobre los juguetes favoritos de Croc y Boo, llegamos a la conclusión que son los cajas de Cartón embalajes usados, Palos, animales de juguete, Agua y Barro

I recently had to pull Croc out of one of those large outdoor rubbish bins as he´d seen a cardboard box inside he wanted to paint.  Later the same day he spotted a neighbour leaving the post office with a parcel and he ran after her to ask for her box!

Hace poco hubo que sacar a Croc de un contenedor de basura donde se había colado a buscar una caja de cartón que quería pintar. Ese mismo día vió a una vecina salir de la oficina de correso con un paquete y allá que se fue a pedírselo.

Boo loves to water the plants at our allotment (more to come on this later x), she loves mostly the water and one day not being satisfied with showering herself with the watering can she just jumped inside the a bucket of water and splashed about.
A Boo le encanta regar las plantas del huerto familiar (ya publicaremos algo más), a ella le encanta el agua y un día, después de ducharse al aire libre, se metió en un cubo y se puso a tirar agua a su alrededor.
Sticks seem to be a permanent extension of Crocs arm.  It doesn´t matter what size or type, if he sees a stick he´ll have it and have created a new game in minutes.  Recently in the park he found several twigs and surprised me when he made the letter M and came bouncing over to tell me.  We carried on collecting sticks and spelt his name.
Los palos  siempre están allá donde Croc va y consguir que no entren en casa es un triunfo. Le encanta recoger palos de todos los tamaños para usarlos en el huerto . Con ellos se dedica a crear juegos y aventuras imaginarias de todo tipo. Hace poco se saco de la manga una M creada con ramitas... Continuamos recogiendo palos para lograr componer su nombre.  

What is it about these few simple things that they love?

These simple "toys" are truly educational.  They stimulate creative play and imagination, a box and stick can be made to represent anything, chocolate mud ice-cream anyone?  The sensory stimulation when playing with water and mud are great ways for children to learn.  Small animals can be used to make up whole new worlds and stories, amazing for language building.  These are just a few things they can get out of this type of play. But one of the best things is that they are child-directed so they get to choose, decide, direct, be the boss. Building their confidence and sense of self all along the way.

Qué les gusta de estas cosas tan simples?
Estos juguetes son verdaderamente educativos. Estimulan el juego creativo y la imaginación, una caja y un palo pueden representar cualquier cosa, alguién quiere helado de chocolate a base de barro??  La estimulación sensorialcuando se juega con barro y agua es una manera excelente de aprender. Los animales de juguete se pueden usar para construir mundos e historias, indispensables para ejercitar el lenguaje. Estas son algunas de las cosas que sacan de este tipo de juego, aunque creo que la más importante es que ellos dirigen estos juegos, son libres de elegir, decidir, modificar, ser los jefes. Consiguen con ello mejorar su confianza  y su sentido de si mismos, a

Lets Pretend- Pretendamos

The 29th day of the 30 days Hands on Play challenge - Pretend Play.  Croc has the wildest imagination that makes pretend play so much fun, he loves getting into roles and being someone or something else.

I saw a similar idea to this on another blog (but have since forgotten where, sorry!).  We played at bakers shop!

El día 29 de los 30 días de desafío Hands on  Play - Juego Simbólico. Croc tiene la imaginación más salvaje que hace que el juego simbólico sea muy divertido y no se canse de jugar mucho, le encanta meterse en los papeles y ser alguien o algo diferente.
Esta idea nace de una similar que Ruth vió en otro blog (pero desde entonces ha olvidado de dónde, lo siento!). Jugamos en la panadería!

I laid out his blocks in the bun mold tray (I think play dough would have been much more fun here but I didn´t have any ready, note to self to ALWAYS have some play dough ready!)

Croc put on his chef´s hat and apron and played the baker, we sang the nursery rhyme 3 current buns (12 in our case), and I wrote them down on the wipe board as we sang along.  I, Boo and the Duplo figures all "bought" the buns.

Puse  sus bloques en la bandeja de moldes (creo que la plastilina habría sido mucho más divertido aquí, pero yo no tenía ninguna preparada, NOTA: tener siempre un poco de plasti  listo!)

Croc se  puso su sombrero de chef y el delantal y jugó a ser el panadero, cantamos la canción de cuna "Three current buns" (12 en nuestro caso), y yo escribía en el pizarrón a medida que en la canción íbamos contando. Yo,  Boo y las figuras de Duplo  "compramos" los bollos.

It was a really fun activity, we managed to squeeze in some singing, maths, colour sorting and imaginative play into it.

Cardboard Rocket- Cohete de cartón

Today we´ve made a rocket from a big cardboard box.
Hoy hemos hecho un Cohete de una caja enorme de cartón.

The 26th challenge for the hands on play challenge was to use a cardboard box (or two). 
Para el Reto del día, hemos usado unas cajas de cartón además de el ingenio de nenes y papis y la del tío Brokas que estaba de visita en casa

Small world play- Pequeño mundo para jugar

Another day another challenge from the 30 day hands on Play challenge.  Make a small world for the kids and let them play.

I like to make small world play scene´s with different materials (duplo and wooden blocks; paper; household items; play dough etc) as it adds a sensory element to the play.

Otro día, otro reto de los 30 días de Desafío de Hands on Play. Hacer un pequeño mundo (suena a restaurante oriental) para los niños y dejarlos jugar.
Me gustó hacer esta pequeña escena de mundo y dejar que jueguen con diferentes materiales (duplo y bloques de madera, papel, artículos para el hogar, jugar, etc masa), ya que añade un elemento sensorial a la obra.

Boat racing! Pretend Play- Carrera de Barcos

We have been keeping up at home with the 30 Day Hands on challenge but I haven´t done the same here.  Back to today's challenge from Jaime @ Hands On: as we grow, Playful Fun! Tickles, play fights and laughter.  Our take on this theme was boat racing on cushions along the hall.
Hemos estado manteniendonos al día en casa con el reto de los 30 días Hands on Play, aunque no hemos estado tan al loro en el blogg. El reto de hoy de Jaime es sobre juegos graciosos, cosquillas, peleas fingidas y risas varias. Nuestra manera de plantearlo fueron carreras de barcos y cojines en el pasillo de la casa.  

Day 4 Islands

Todays challenge comes from Jaime @ Hands on: as we grow.  The plan is simple, make some Islands and let the kids and their imaginations loose.

It´s been a lovely sunny day here but it isn´t to last so I thought Id take our Island game outside and take advantage of the sunshine.

The local playground is deserted in the morning so off we went to play.  As we arrived I started talking about the blue floor area being the sea and the green area an Island.  That was more than enough for Croc to get going.  The climbing frame became the pirate ship in shark infested waters,   Quick all aboard!

We stopped on the Island for a picnic (using the pram balnket), and scavanged food (twigs and leaves).  Croc made the dinner on the ship and then we went looking to see who might live on an Island like this, we found a small door but nobody was home!!!

And Boo?  She loved the climbing part and I couldn´t believe how she went up the rope ladder - a true pirate in the making.  I pretended to swish my hands in the water and she copied this laughing away.

We spent ages "lost" on our Island.  I loved taking this outside to the playground as, similar to the blocks, it´s somewhere I go with the children but dont always play there with them.

This challenge was the perfet warmer to the pirate weekend we´ve been planning.  Will post about our adventures this weekend.

Free Play- Juego Libre

We haven´t posted for a while, I´ve found myself too tired to get on to the internet and write up about our adventures.  I have been recording some of the things we´ve been up to and thought I´d start with this wonderful play moment we had the other day.

 

It all came about as I was making the beds.  Croc came along and wanted to lay some blankets on the bed and make a house.  Ok, I thought, I´m not in any rush to get the bed done so lets see where he takes this, I grabbed the camara and this is what happened.

Aunque llevamos días sin publicar nada, por cansancio de las figuras paternas de la casa, Ruth si que ha ido almacenando algunas cositas que ha estado haciendo con los nenes. Empezamos con un momento de juego muy bonito de hace unos días.

Sucedió mientras hacía las camas, Croc llegó y pidió poner mantas en la cama para hacer un casa. Así que dicho y hecho a ver donde nos lleva. Así que fue a por la camara y se preparó para lo mejor.

He layered the blankets on the bed, (very carefully) commenting on what each blanket represented and who was there  (mostly favourite characters from books). 

 

Then he found his little sisters sleeping bag and tried to get in, being the baby again!

Así que puso las mmantas en la cama con cuidadito, mientras comentaba lo que representaba cad una de las mantas y quién estaba allí (Personajes de cuento como Bambi por ejemplo)...
Entonces encontró un saco de dormir de su herman y se propuso meterse en él (!viva la regresión!)

 

Then the story changed and he was on a boat and the floor was the sea with dangerous crocodiles.  He dressed himself with some blankets and his crocodile teddy.
Entonces dió un giro surrealista: estaba en un barco y el suelo de la habitación era el mar infestado de peligrosos cocodrilos. Se vistió con mantas y tomo su peluche cocodrilo. El propósito lo desococemos....

 

 

As croc dragged over his chair, Boo jumped at the chance and created herself a little climbing frame.  Up and down, down and up again and again and again......

Cuando Croc trajo su silla cerca de la cama, la nena cogió la ocasión para practicar subir y bajar escaleras que es algo que últimamente le apasiona. Una y otra vez....

Both the kids were playing for ages, as I just sat, watched and marvalled.  Play doesn´t always need to be focused,directed or created by us adults.  Children take the initive themselves and create wonderful worlds to play in. And just letting these moments go with the flow help build:

• Creative imagination
• Language skills through inventing stories
• Sense of confidence (making something happen from nothing)
• physical strength (in Boo´s case!!!)

Ambos estuviero jugando largo rato, mientras Ruth miraba y flipaba. El juego no tiene necesariamente que ser creado o enfocado por un adulto. Los niños toman la iniciativa ellos mismos y crean mundos maravillosos en los que jugar. Y deajr que estos momentos surjan y fluyan, ayuda a construir: 

• La imaginación creativa.
• Las habilidades lingüísticas.
• El sentido de valía y confianza en uno mismo (hacer algo por ti mismo)
• Fuerza y habilidad física  

Pretend Play - Juego Simbólico

I was originally going to do a round up entry to bring us up to date but as I was writing it I realised that a lot of the things were pretend play.  So I´ve decided to write a bit about what children get from pretend play .

Iba a hacer una entrada para ponernos al día, pero mientras me ponía a escribir me di cuenta de que muchas de las cosas que está haciendo Croc últimamente son juego simbólico. Así que decidí escribir un poco sobre lo que consiguen los niños a través del juego simbólico, lo importante que es.

Pretend play is so diverse and can be done individual, parent-child or in a peer group.  Props may be used but are not necessary, and the props may not have to be anything to do with what the theme of the play is about.  A coloured scarf can be transformed into anything from a fireman's hose, a fishing rod or a sling to hold a baby (or at least that's whats happened in our house!), whereas specific play areas and toys, for example a sand-pit or street mat with cars, creates pretend play within a specific theme.
Common themes are family based, school or familiar social group settings (play group/church/sports group), literary and TV characters are also commonly drawn on for re-representation through pretend play.

Juego Simbólico

El Juego Simbólico es tan diverso que puede hacerse de forma individual, junto a sus padres o con el grupo de  iguales. Juguetes u otros elementos pueden ser usados aunque no son estrictamente necesarios, además cuando se usan pueden no tener que ver con el tema de juego para el que se usan. Una bufanda puede usarse como cualquier cosa: serpiente, manguera de bombero, caña de pescar o bandana para llevar un bebé (ver la foto, se le ocurrió a él solo), mientras que áreas específicas de juego y juguetes, como por ejemplo areneros o alfombras con calles y carreteras favorecen que el juego vaya dirigido hacia un tema. Aún así es sorprendente lo que pueden hacer en un escenario que parece restringido a un solo tema.

Temas comunes pueden estar basados en la familia, la escuela   o situaciones sociales familiares parea ellos (grupo de juegos, iglesia o deportes), personajes de cuentos o libros y desde luego que de la tele también intervienen en las representaciones de juego simbólico.

 

Pretend play is hugely important in infant/child development, through this form of play they symbolically represent their world. 

El juego simbólico es muy importante para el niño y para su desarrollo. A través de esta forma de juego van representando el mundo significativo para ellos. Es una forma de ensayar conductas observadas y aprendidas en otras áreas de su vida y también una forma de relacionarse utilizando la creatividad. Creo que los adultos deberíamos usar más estas capacidades que durante mucho tiempo nos entretuvieron tanto.  
Language development
If the child is playing on their own a narrative story is developed, which may include several characters in which they act out, using and developing their dialogue, from conversational turn taking to more complex arguments and discussion ("Fireman Sam wants the fire engine but Farmer Norah says he cant have it yet because she needs it first" is another of our in house examples!!).  Between peer groups, language development is just as rich as children have to negotiate and plan whats happening, they construct story lines together, build on their vocab and use verb commands to direct play.
Stories are often adapted say from a favourite book/TV show or totally improvised trying out and reinforcing language skills.

Desarrollo del Lenguaje

Cuando el niño está jugando solo una narrative se desarrolla, que puede incluir diversos caracteres que actúan usando y desarrollando un diálogo entre ellos, desde intercambios simples hasta discusiones más complejas  (“El bombero Sam quiere el camión de bomberos pero la Granjera Nora dice que no puede, por que ella lo necesita primero” es uno de los ejemplos que surgió en nuestra casa) Entre el grupo de iguales el desarrollo del lenguaje es muy  rico por que los niños tienen que negociar y planificar que es lo que van a hacer  juntos, construyen historias juntos o enriquecen el vocabulario unos de otros, también dirigen el juego con mandatos verbales. Las historias a veces tienen que ver con libros o series conocidas o se inventan sin más usando la imaginación que para eso la tienen fresquita y desbordante. 

Non-verbal language is also used and harmonious development of play can happen without any specific oral  conscious planning.

El lenguaje no verbal se usa para desarrollar el juego de forma armoniosa sin ningún contacto oral explícito ni planificación consciente si quiera.

Problem solving, Planning and Roles

An initial plan must be thought of and set out to start play and then as things develop and a scenery gets going quite complex plans are made reviewed, edited or discarded. Through these plans children must problem solve as each new situations arises, if playing with peers they must work together and come to a common agreement.  When playing together children take on different group roles such as leader/organiser/doer.  These roles often change within short spaces of time, one child may suggest a new plan and then they become "leader" and direct play for a while.

Solucion de Problemas

Para empezar a jugar hay que partir de un plan inicial y mientras el escenario evoluciona y se hace más complejo, los planes se re evalúan, se editan o  eliminan. Cuando esto sucede los niños tienen que ir solucionando los problemas que surgen en cada nueva situación, cuando juegan con compañeros o amigos tiene que trabajar juntos y llegar a acuerdos. Cuando juegan juntos los niños toman roles tales como líder, organizador o trabajador. Estos roles pueden cambiar en cortos espacios de tiempo, cuando un niño sugiere un nuevo juego que capta el interés del resto, puede convertirse en el director del juego por un tiempo.

Creative thinking

Imaginative play is all about creativity, a new world is created and the possibilities for each situation are limitless.  A child can test out and investigate how things can change and develop through pretend play, they are able to control and give life to many characters and situations changing them to please themselves and

their mood.  A richness in pretend play can help stimulate creativity and help to develop a child's response to new situations.

El juego imaginativo vive de la creatividad, un Nuevo mundo es creado y las posibilidades de cada situación no tienen límites. El niño puede experimentar y probar como las cosas cambian y se desarrollan a través del juego simbólico es capaz de controlar y dar vida a muchos caracteres y situaciones cambiándolos para su disfrute y según su estado de ánimo. El juego simbólico es saludable para estimular la creatividad y desarrollar la respuesta del niño a nuevas situaciones.
