Big Beach Art - Ruldolf! Reno, en la playa

Saturday was a beautiful sunny winters day, a walk down by the beach was what was on the agenda for the afternoon (and ice cream for Daddy Croc and Boo).  I love to comb the beach in the winter, its full of lots of interesting things that have been washed up in the storms.  Its mostly drift wood but of all different species, shapes and sizes.

This year we´re going to be spending all of the christmas holidays away so I didn´t want to out up a full tree, but I did want to do something.  We settled on making a tree from branches, collecting, painting and decorating them ourselves.  One thing extended into 3 days of activities - love it!

Day 4 Islands

Todays challenge comes from Jaime @ Hands on: as we grow.  The plan is simple, make some Islands and let the kids and their imaginations loose.

It´s been a lovely sunny day here but it isn´t to last so I thought Id take our Island game outside and take advantage of the sunshine.

The local playground is deserted in the morning so off we went to play.  As we arrived I started talking about the blue floor area being the sea and the green area an Island.  That was more than enough for Croc to get going.  The climbing frame became the pirate ship in shark infested waters,   Quick all aboard!

We stopped on the Island for a picnic (using the pram balnket), and scavanged food (twigs and leaves).  Croc made the dinner on the ship and then we went looking to see who might live on an Island like this, we found a small door but nobody was home!!!

And Boo?  She loved the climbing part and I couldn´t believe how she went up the rope ladder - a true pirate in the making.  I pretended to swish my hands in the water and she copied this laughing away.

We spent ages "lost" on our Island.  I loved taking this outside to the playground as, similar to the blocks, it´s somewhere I go with the children but dont always play there with them.

This challenge was the perfet warmer to the pirate weekend we´ve been planning.  Will post about our adventures this weekend.

Painting Leaves- Pintar hojas

Its Autumn.
Leaves are everywhere, so today we went to the playground to decorate a few of them.

One of the good things about not sending the kids to nursery is that we can go to the parks and playgrounds when its quiet (during school hours) and use them for ourselves.  Painting in the playground would be impossible at 4 pm when all the children are coming out of school, so we went down early sat in the lovely autumn sun and picked some leaves.

Last night I made up a batch of non-toxic baby friendly paint. I have a reciepe for homemade paint in a Montessori at Home book but it includes detergent, so when I saw this paint at the very wonderful  The Imagination Tree I just had to have a go at making it (follow link for reciepe).  I changed it slightly in that I used natural colouring instead of food colouring.  Natural colours tend to give a very soft colour but also add smell to the whole experience.  I used Paprika, coffee and tomato ketchup.

Croc  painted really carefully and concentrated in painting all the leaf without going out.  This is something he has recently developed himself naturally, when we get the colours out at home I just leave him to it.  We talk about what he´s drawing and he shows themes for things, his most recent being maps.  This is the first time he´s "coloured in" something he´d previously just paint over without following the form.

Little Boo kept looking over at her bro and copied him putting in the brush, mixing it around, and painting it.  She loved it when it splashed on the floor and kept flicking out the paint so it made bubble like patterns on the path.

Mmm, Paprika Paint!

Autumn Afternoon Walk- Paseo Otoñal

Not that its been very Autumnal really, infact it was boiling on our first afternoon walk on Tuesday.  I used to take Croc on a lot of afternoon walks but these seemed to have dwindled away with the arrival of Boo, now she´s 13 mths old and I think its good time to start up with this habit again.

We´re quite lucky where we live in that there is plenty to see and learn just a few minutes outside the village.  I thought we´d go for the "farm" route (as the name suggests you pass by a farm!).

First on the animal trail - Horses
I found the reaction from the kids really intersting.  Boo was so excited when she first caught sight of the horse she almost fell from her pushchair, and just kept squawking and pointing in delight.  Croc counted them, talked about the colours and asked if they were mummy horses, so we had a look and they weren´t.

 A very hairy hungry catepillar
Una oruga muy hambrienta y peluda.

Just outside the farm is a small public green with a bench and all animals tend to wander in and out of this area (well not the cows), so we sat down for a well earned rest and watched the cockeral attack the other birds.

Again as Boo was just happy to see them and listen to me making an idiot of myself animal noises, Croc wanted much more.  He´s 3 now and has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.
  1. Why does the cockerel crow in the morning?
  2. Why does it have a red bit on its head?         ¿Por qué tiene cresta?
  3. Wheres the mummy cockerel?                   ¿donde está la mamá del gallo?
  4. What´s it eating?                                      ¿qué suele comer ?
  5. Why is it eating that?....                            ¿por qué como éso?

To continue on this theme, today we went for our afternoon snack to a small look out point close to home where there are some sheep in a field.

Shouting at the sheep this time
Gritándoles a las ovejasss!

Holidays Vacaciones

We´ve been away on our holidays (I wrote a small entry before going away saying this but seems it didn´t post), life slowed down whilst we enjoyed nature at her best in the Pyrenees.  During our holidays we took a break from doing or setting up any specific activity/project for the kids and just let them play, absorb and learn in a natural way.  Im going to post about our different adventures breaking them up over the next few days.

Food and Drink.
Our first few days were spent with friends.  Their neighbours were away for the weekend and had asked them to take care of the chickens.  So off we went first thing in the morning to let the chickens out.  Croc was a bit apprehensive about getting in the chicken coup to feed and water them but after he saw his friend (who is a bit of an old hat at this!) in there he was soon in to lend a helping hand.  After refilling the water they went to the hatch to collect the eggs. Two little brown eggs were there, perfect one each! (Miraculously one even reached home intact)

Bien!

With dinner sorted we went off in search of something to drink.

The boys collecting water from a natural spring.  First in the bottle, then directly in the mouth and then... everywhere!

On the walk back home they collected wild flowers to decorate the dinner table with.  Here they are sharing out the bunch to carry home.

Outside in the garden there´s loads going on.   Croc loves to explore around and dig in the soil.  He gets really excited when he sees little garden animals and he listens out when we point out the bird song to him (just yesterday we heard a cuckoo fore the first time).  Yesterday we we´re doing a bit of gardening with boo and croc around.  We talked about all the animals we could find in the garden.  Here´s the list he came up with:

    • Snails                  Caracoles
    • Slugs                    Babosas
    • Worms                Gusanos
    • Bees                    Abejas
    • Wasps                 Avispas
    • Flies                     Moscas
    • Ants                     Hormiga
  • ~

As I did some weeding I found some interesting things which I showed to him to see what he´d make of them.  (NB the previous owners kept animals!)

Two animal bones

A dead chick

An animal tooth (horse or cow maybe?)

He picked them up and felt them a bit and then kind of poked of the bird.  Without any of the ickyness I had picking it from the ground.

He also learnt this week that wasps sting and poking their nest with a stick is what makes them angry.

There is also a swallows nest in the beams on the porch, the eggs have recently hatched and there are 3 chicks are just peeping over the edge of the nest.   Croc loves to see the swallows swoop in and feed the chicks with cries of "Mummy, Mummy the birdy´s in the box!!"

Underwater world

I loved these  sensory water themed tubs from Kirsten at Sense of Wonder, and just knew that the kids would too.  I used an empty sand pit, filled it with water and then some sea animals and a few rocks which Croc helped me collect.

Boo was the first one to start splashing around inside, she pulled out the animals sucked on them chucked them back in and splashed some more.

Croc started to play and within minutes asked if he could get in too.
He loved it from inside.
Encantado

He built up the rocks on one side and then put up the animals talking to himself as he went along.  The bits I caught were that all the animals were on the rocks together as they were friends and then the whale would push the dolphin in and then the Crocodile would push the Fish (you get the picture!).

This was a huge success with them both and I think its the first thing we´ve done where they´ve played side by side without it ending tears.

What else can we put in the sand pit?

shape searching

This is one of our (many) favourite books, we have three from this collection and croc loves them all.  .  He´s still learning shapes so I thought a good way to take this from the book to real life was to go in search for shapes, and where better than to start than down at the beach.

A washed up plastic container lid
was our first find.

More washed up rubbish, a foam square stuck in between the rocks and a plastic net made of tiny squares.
Our very own snack was a good a good one.
Which quickly disappeared.

Not to be left out Boo loved this stone, and we also popped them into her mini paddling pool where she enjoyed watching them plop into the water.
After much searching we decided to make our own shapes, Croc wanted to make a stone circle first, and then went in for some double handed free-stlye shape making in the sand, and even Roberto joined in drawing on the rocks with some burnt wood he found.

To be continued.... (when we find more shapes!)
Continuará cuando encontremos más formas.

Outdoor Adventure- Vamos al Parque!

A new adventure playground has been built near us, so we finally decided to go check it out.  We love going to playgrounds and are lucky as we have lots of really good (small) ones all within walking distance, this one is further away but has the added extra excitment of being brand spanking new and much bigger than the local ones.

A well built playground is an amazing space for outdoor play.  Young children need to developed their gross motor skills (the large muscles) and what better way than, running, climbling, swinging and sliding down head first!  Many playgrounds also feature stuctures such as boats, trains, houses, that inspires and encourages creative imagination, after 10 minutes in the playground we´d already gone on a trip overseas on the train picked up several family members and then run away from the crocodiles in the sea below us!  Children also learn to test and develop their own sense of self (physically and emotionally), can I cross the climbing frame, or climb the ladder, run up the slide??  An outdoor playground also develops and creates a lot of social interaction, from the very simple see-saw to the creative imagination play that goes off in the purpose built structures (houses/trains etc) .  All this from just a simple trip down to the local park.

Playing at Fireman Sam, ready to rescue Dilys!

And its not just the older kids who get to strecth their legs in the playground...

Am loving it!!!

Saint Anthony´s Festival - Fiesta de San Antonio en el Pueblo

We thought we´d dedicate a blog entry to last weekends Saint Anthony´s Festival.   Croc and Boo´s paternal Grandad comes from a small farming village in Segovia, where they celebrate Saint Anthony (13th June) and this year we met up with the family, 42 all together ranging from 9mths (Boo) to 88 yrs old!

The older generation showing the younger how its done on the dancefloor!

Once back at the house all the kids got together and enjoyed some free play.  Roberto´s Aunty got out some old toys (some older than us!) put them in a homemade plant pot she had laying around spread out some sand and away they played.
Muchas gracias!

As mentioned earlier croc loves playing at camping so we put up our tent in the yard...
and it was soon filled up with no room for the adults.
