Little hands big skills

This is by far one of the simplest and fun ways for working those fine motor skills.  3 different sized bowls and some dried beans.  

 I filled the largest bowl and poured it into the second bowl and Boo didn´t need any more input from me.

I got thinking about Croc and Boo´s favourite play things.  They are (in no particular order) cardboard boxes, sticks, small toy animals water and mud.

I recently had to pull Croc out of one of those large outdoor rubbish bins as he´d seen a cardboard box inside he wanted to paint.  Later the same day he spotted a neighbour leaving the post office with a parcel and he ran after her to ask for her box!

Hace poco hubo que sacar a Croc de un contenedor de basura donde se había colado a buscar una caja de cartón que quería pintar. Ese mismo día vió a una vecina salir de la oficina de correso con un paquete y allá que se fue a pedírselo.

Boo loves to water the plants at our allotment (more to come on this later x), she loves mostly the water and one day not being satisfied with showering herself with the watering can she just jumped inside the a bucket of water and splashed about.
A Boo le encanta regar las plantas del huerto familiar (ya publicaremos algo más), a ella le encanta el agua y un día, después de ducharse al aire libre, se metió en un cubo y se puso a tirar agua a su alrededor.
Sticks seem to be a permanent extension of Crocs arm.  It doesn´t matter what size or type, if he sees a stick he´ll have it and have created a new game in minutes.  Recently in the park he found several twigs and surprised me when he made the letter M and came bouncing over to tell me.  We carried on collecting sticks and spelt his name.
Los palos  siempre están allá donde Croc va y consguir que no entren en casa es un triunfo. Le encanta recoger palos de todos los tamaños para usarlos en el huerto . Con ellos se dedica a crear juegos y aventuras imaginarias de todo tipo. Hace poco se saco de la manga una M creada con ramitas... Continuamos recogiendo palos para lograr componer su nombre.  

What is it about these few simple things that they love?

These simple "toys" are truly educational.  They stimulate creative play and imagination, a box and stick can be made to represent anything, chocolate mud ice-cream anyone?  The sensory stimulation when playing with water and mud are great ways for children to learn.  Small animals can be used to make up whole new worlds and stories, amazing for language building.  These are just a few things they can get out of this type of play. But one of the best things is that they are child-directed so they get to choose, decide, direct, be the boss. Building their confidence and sense of self all along the way.

Qué les gusta de estas cosas tan simples?
Estos juguetes son verdaderamente educativos. Estimulan el juego creativo y la imaginación, una caja y un palo pueden representar cualquier cosa, alguién quiere helado de chocolate a base de barro??  La estimulación sensorialcuando se juega con barro y agua es una manera excelente de aprender. Los animales de juguete se pueden usar para construir mundos e historias, indispensables para ejercitar el lenguaje. Estas son algunas de las cosas que sacan de este tipo de juego, aunque creo que la más importante es que ellos dirigen estos juegos, son libres de elegir, decidir, modificar, ser los jefes. Consiguen con ello mejorar su confianza  y su sentido de si mismos, a

Small world play- Pequeño mundo para jugar

Another day another challenge from the 30 day hands on Play challenge.  Make a small world for the kids and let them play.

I like to make small world play scene´s with different materials (duplo and wooden blocks; paper; household items; play dough etc) as it adds a sensory element to the play.

Otro día, otro reto de los 30 días de Desafío de Hands on Play. Hacer un pequeño mundo (suena a restaurante oriental) para los niños y dejarlos jugar.
Me gustó hacer esta pequeña escena de mundo y dejar que jueguen con diferentes materiales (duplo y bloques de madera, papel, artículos para el hogar, jugar, etc masa), ya que añade un elemento sensorial a la obra.

Jelly On a Plate- Gelatina y gusanos

Croc´s been digging for worms a lot lately so I made up a dish of red Jelly and added in some blue noodles for some wiggly slimy worm sensory tub play!!

Croc kept touching the surface but didn´t want to stick his finger in at first, but once he put his finger in he scooped it everywhere.   Over and over and over again.

Croc ha estado excavando en busca de gusanos mucho últimamente, así que hice un plato de gelatina de color rojo y le añadí algunos fideos de color azul para hacer juego sensorial con viscosos gusanos saltarines!

Croc mantuvo contacto con la superficie, pero no quiso meter el dedo en principio, pero una vez que lo metió la recorrió por todas partes. Una y otra y otra vez.

 

Boo´s first thought as usual was to taste it, and to her surprise it was strawberry flavoured Jelly not some salty play dough!  I think she ate most of the contents.

El primer impulso de Boo fue probarlo, y para su sorpresa era gelatina de sabor Fresa y no una plastilina salada. Creo que se comió gran parte de los contenidos.

Croc piled it on the table then back in again.  I asked him what it felt like:

"Cold"

"Red"

"Sticky"

We sang the chant Wibble wobble wibble wobble jelly on a plate.

Croc lo apilaba en la mesa de nuevo. Le pregunté cómo se sentía al tocar la gelatina:"Frío"

"Rojo"

"Pegajoso"

                         Terminamos cantando una canción dedicada la gelatina.



Water Play

I missed writing up about yesterdays  Hands On Play Challenge - Water Play.

Here´s what we got up to:

 Bath time for Little Mary Lamb.

 Thirsty work.

They had sooooo much fun.  Boo must have drank half the contents of the tubs before we finished.  We only ended as she discovered she could pick up the tub and pour out the entire contents over herself!

Croc loved the scooping and pouring.  I added two walnuts, he liked that  they floated and spent ages popping them in the funnel and trying to cause an overspill from the little container.

No Bake Chocolate Squares

These are the easiest and yummiest chocolate biscuits around.  They always get a comment when we get them out the cupboard and they are our favourite family treat.  There´s no cooking involved, just a bit of melting and then setting in the fridge, a doddle even for the youngest cook.

No Bake Squares

200g Plain Biscuits (Digestives work well)

50 g Butter

2 Tbsp Honey (or syrup)

1 Tsp Cinnamon (or cocoa for double choc!)
Generous handful of dried fruits (I tend to go with just raisins, but have added a whole variety of different dried fruits and nuts)

150g Cooking chocolate

Place the biscuits in a plastic bag and crush them until they make a fine crumble mix.

Melt the butter and honey together, add the Cinnamon.
Mix the dried ingredients into the honey/butter.  Stir well.
Press down firmly into a dish.

Leave the biscuit mixture to set whilst preparing the chocolate covering.

Melt the chocolate (over simmering water or in the microwave)

Smooth over the biscuit mix and leave to cool.

Surely every Chef has the right to clean out the chocolate bowl!

Day 4 Play dough Challenge

Free style Playdough challenge.

Just give them the playdough, some things to use with it and let them at it.

This was a lucky one for us as just the night before Croc and I made up some new coloured playdough.

Whilst Croc was out I chose some things we had in the house and left them out for him to discover when he got back. 

Coffee beans, scented tea leaves, dried chilli, pebbles

We all sat round the table and had some super sensory fun with the playdough.  It was a bit sticky (we live in a humid area and it hadn´t dried out well) but croc loved it even more for that.  He got his hands right into and started making things.  

Boo seemed a bit wary at first, just sticking one finger at a time.  I passed her a pebble which got pressed into the middle.  She then squished and squashed with it, and of course ate a good few finger fulls.

"A prickly thing!"

At the end, Croc took out the things Id found for him pilled the bowl high with playdough and said it was a Birthday cake.  He asked for a candle and we all sang Happy Birthday.

Toffee Apples

We may not be in England to celebrate Bonfire night but it doesn´t mean we can´t eat toffee apples.  I love this sticky sweet treat and knew Croc would too.

The neighbour (4 yrs old) was invited over to help, but as soon as he arrived the two boys disappeared off down the hall to play.  Leaving me to make the toffee.  They were, however, enticed back to dip the apples.

The taste team declared them officially scrummy.  Later confirmed by yours truly.

Toffee Apples

Ingredients

• 4 Granny Smith Apples
• 200g sugar
• 50 ml cold water
• 1/2 tsp Vinegar
• 2 Tbsp Golden Syrup
• 1 (breakfast) bowl of cold water
• 1 large plate

Preparing the apples

Put the apples in a large bowl and pour over boiling water.  This removes the wax coating and helps the toffee stick.

Skewer with a spoon or lolly stick.

Method

• Put the sugar and water into in a pan and stir over a medium heat until the sugar has completely dissolved.
• Add the vinegar and syrup.
• Boil hard until "hard crack" point.  You can test this by scooping out a little and dropping it into the bowl of cold water.  The toffee should immediately go hard and be brittle when removed from the water.
• Once ready, working quickly, dip the apples in toffee coating them all the way round.  If the toffee starts to go hard put it back on the heat to help it soften.
• Leave to cool on the plate.

 "El hombre de gengibre" es un cuento muy popular en England, y Ruth lo aprovechó para hacer una tarde de repostería con los nenes.

Today we made Gingerbread men.  I love Gingerbread and having just got hold of some golden syrup (not easly found in Spain), we had to celebrate by making some gingerbread biscuits.

El cuento habla de unos ancianos que no han tenido la suerte de tener hijos (queríéndolos claro) y hacen un hombre de pan de gengibre que hornean pidiendo que se haga su hijito. El horno opera la magia y el pequeño hombre de pan de gengibre sale corriendo creyendo que se lo van a comer. Es muy rápido y puede huir de los ancianos, de una vaca, de un caballo.... pero se encuentra con un zorro que le ayuda a cruzar un río... pero ai! parece que se va hundiendo y le pide que se arrime a su cabeza..... en el cuento tradicional se lo come, pero hay otra versión en que escapa y sigue dando la vuelta al mundo. (bien!!!)    

When I suggested to Croc that we should make gingerbread, he asked if we could make one that would run away!  He then got the shape cutter and started to play and sing the rhyme from the story of the Gingerbread man.

Croc pidió que las figuras de pan de gengibre pudieran correr y estuvo cantando la rima del cuento mientras hacían la mezcla. Creo que las figuras trataron de escapar.... algunas llegaron a casa de otros amiguitos pero no mucho más lejos.

 But it wasn´t long before we got stuck into the messy stuff.

GingerBread

• 340 g     Plain flour
• 113g      Butter/Margerine
• 113g      Sugar
• 113g      Golden syrup*
• 3/4 tsp   Bi-carbsoda
• 3/4 tsp   Baking Powder
• 3/4 tsp   Ground Ginger

1. Rub butter into flour, then add rest of ingredients. 
2. Knead together untill it forms a uniform ball.  Roll and cut into Gingerbread men (or any shape you have.)
3. Cook at around 130º until golden.  This is roughly 10 minutes, but experiment with timing as to how crispy or chewy you like them.
4. Leave to cool and crisp on wire rack.

*Honey will do if you cant get golden syrup but tends to make it more sticky so maybe use less-experiment and see!!

Pan de Gengibre:

• 340 g     Harina
• 113g      Mantequilla/Margarina
• 113g      Azúcar
• 113g      Sirope dorado (puede substituirse por miel, usando un poco menos ya que hace la  mezcla más pegajosa) Golden syrup
• 3/4 tsp   Bi-carbonato de soda
• 3/4 tsp   levadura
• 3/4 tsp   Gengibre en polvo

1. Mezclar la mantequilla con la harina consiguiendo una pasta, después añadir el resto de los ingredientes.
2. Trabajar con las manos hasta que se forme una bola uniforme. Se aplana con un rodillo u se corta con un molde para hacer la forma deseada (hombrecitos, estrellas....)
3. Cocinar a unos 130º en el horno durante aproximadamente 10 minutos. Esto depende del horno y de como quieras que esté la galleta.
4. Dejar que se enfríen en una rejilla (así estarán crujientes). 

Safari Animal Sensory Play - Mundo animal

I had planned to do some simple playdough stuff this afternoon, so made up a new batch whilst everyone was taking their afternoon nap.  However as I made the playdough with green and silver colouring I started to imagine trees and rocks and slowly formed an imagine of a safari animal sensory world. 

Había planeado hacer algo con plastilina esta tarde, así que preparé plastilina casera mientras los nenes estaban echando su siesta. Sin embargo, como estaba haciendo la plastilina con colores verde y plata empecé a ver árboles y rocas formando la imagen de un mundo sensorial con animales formando un safari.

I found some green plastic wrapping paper, yellow tissue paper, brown parcel paper and blue card which I put down on the floor.  I used the playdough to make trees and rocks to decorate, added some wooden blocks and then the animals.

Utilicé  papel de regalo de color verde, servilletas amarillas, papel marrón de embalar y cartulina azul para hacer los suelos. Usé la plastilina para hacer árboles y rocas, añadí bloques de madera y por fin los animales para  poblar esta selva .

Boo was the first to wake from her afternoon nap and came crawling straight into the room.  She sat and just looked at the scene for a while and then like something from the Land of the Giants just crawled straight through the middle knocking stuff over and grabing, touching, tasting all the different things.  She seemed most interested in the playdough trees and spent ages picking them up and putting them back.  She also tried to re-build some of the blocks she´d knocked over.

La pequeña Boo fue la primera en levantarse de su siesta y vino gateando directamente a la habitación de juegos .Se sentó  y miró un rato a la escena con interés. Cuando lo vio claro,  como si fuera el ataque de la mujer de 19 pies, procedió a gatear por medio de la escena, cogiendo, tirando cosas, tocando y probando las diferentes figuras. Estaba muy interesada en los árboles de plastilina y paso mucho tiempo experimentando con ellos, cogiéndolos y volviéndolos a situar en su lugar. También intentó volver a reconstruir algunas construcciones que había tirado previamente.  

Not long after Croc joined us, he went straight for the playdough and sat in another corner of the mat and started his own play ignoring all the rest of the stuff Id put out. 

Un poco después Croc se unió, cogió plastilina y se situó en otra esquina de la alfombra, jugando como si estuviera solo en la habitación.

Things were peaceful for a while as Boo entertained herself with the different paper, making it rustle and hiding under it.  She soon moved on from that though and turned her attention back to the playdough.

El juego siguió siendo tranquilo mientras Boo se entretenía con los papeles de diferentes colores, haciéndolos crujir y escondiéndose con ellos. Pronto dejó el papel y volvió su atención a la plastilina.  Aquí se produjeron unos cuantos empujones y alaridos de Boo, para acabar decidiendo una partición de la plastilina, quedándose el mayor con la mayoría y cediendo un poco a Boo.

There were a few shoves and pushes over the playdough, but they finally worked it out for themslves.  Boo got some to play with the lions share going to Croc.

This is the second sensory world we´ve played with and like the water one both Croc and Boo have played together with the same things, even if there is a bit of pushing and shoving over who´s got the most playdough!

Croc has now got quite a few toy animals now and they currently live in the back of a big red lorry.  But when his uncle gave him two new ones this weekend the lorry is getting somewhat overcrowded.  We need to think of a new home for them, maybe something we could make together??  Any ideas?

Esta es la segunda occasion en que hacemos un” mundo sensorial” y como en la ocasión en que hicimos el de agua, los nenes han jugado bastante bien juntos, aceptando algunas disputas como ineludibles para aprender a negociar.

Croc va coleccionando un buen número de animales, que de momento viven en la parte de atrás de su camión rojo. Pero como no paran de llegar (el último par se lo trajo su tío) el camión no da a basto. Tenemos que pensar un nuevo hogar para ellos, igual algo que podamos hacer  juntos.

¿Alguién tiene una buena idea?

Passing it on - Pasándolo.

We´ve had Grandad visiting for a few days and on the last morning of his stay he and Croc baked a chocolate cake together.  Well not just any chocolate cake, but my Granny´s famous dark chocolate cake  (famous within our house at least!). 

Hemos tenido al abuelo (Grangags para Croc) visitándonos unos días. En la última mañana de su estancia Croc y él prepararon un pastel de chocolate  juntos.  Este pastel de chocolate es una receta especial de la Bisabuela de Croc, que ha circulado por la familia (está tremendo).

Now as you may have seen, I like to eat bake cakes and croc loves to make a mess help.  I loved seeing Croc sharing this with his Grandad.  Baking for kids is always lots of fun, especially sticking their fingers in the bowl, they learn so much from this activity and so much more when it can be added with a personal story.  Croc learnt something about my Granny and family relations which  he´s only just getting to grips with this.  He´s just starting to underdstand that his Grandparents are his Parents Parents!, and that his Aunty/Uncle are his Parents Brother/Sister.   So to hear about his Mummy´s-Granny and make something that she used to make made the whole learning more alive.

Como habéis visto en otros blogs, a Ruth le encanta hacer y comer pasteles y a Croc le encanta ayudar (aunque a veces le guste más jugar con los ingredientes). En esta ocasión Croc disfruto de unos momentos estupendos con Grangags.  Preparar y mezclar los ingredientes en el bol siempre es un favorito de los niños, aprenden  mucho de la experiencia y mucho más si además se añade una historia personal a todo ello. Croc aprendió algo de su Bisabuela y las relaciones familiares. Este tema está candente para él, está empezando a comprender que significa que sus  Abuelos son los Padres de sus Padres y que sus Tíos y Tías son hermanos(as) de sus Padres. Así que oír hablar de la Abuela  de su Mama y hacer algo que ella solía hacer hizo que el aprendizaje estuviera de alguna manera más vivo.  El pastel estupendo!

Banana Bread

Yummy.

We´d  I´d  eaten all the cake we´d made for Roberto´s brothers birthday this weekend so Croc joined me in making Banana Bread today.Una vez devorada la tarta del  cumpleaños de tío George este fin de semana, Croc y Ruth prepararon una receta de Pan de Plátano (más bien es un bizcocho de plátano), delicioso.

Measuring out the ingredients helps with eye hand coordination and precision, and introduces the first basic real world maths to children.  (This can be adapted to each age/ability from introducing the idea of weights and volumes to discussing fractions, sums, multiplication and division).

Medir los ingredientes ayuda con la coordinación óculo- manual y la precisión de la motricidad, además de introducir  a los nenes las primeras matemáticas aplicadas a la vida real. Esto se puede adaptar a cada edad y habilidad desde introducir la idea de pesos y volúmenes a adentrarse en fracciones, sumas, multiplicación y división

 Baking is a wonderfully messy  tactile project to do.

La repostería es un proyecto tan táctil que a Croc le encanta meter las manos en la masa.

Banana Bread

100g Plain Flour
100g Wholemeal Flour
1 Tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp Bi-carb
1 Egg (beaten)
3 Bananas (mashed)
5 Tbsp Olive Oil

Mix the flour, baking powder, and Bi-carb in a large bowl and put to one side.
In another bowl mix the mashed banana, egg and sugar.
Add the oil a spoonful at a time, making sure its mixed well before adding the next spoonful.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry.  Mix well.
Cook in a pre.-heated oven at 180º for 35 mins (ready when a knife comes out clean).

Pan/Bizcocho de Plátano

100 gr. de harina

100 gr. de harina integral

1 cucharada sopera de levadura.

1 cucharada sopera de Bicarbonato

1 huevo batido

3 plátanos (de Canarias claro)

5 cucharadas soperas de aceite de oliva.

Mezclamos las harinas, la levadura y el bicarbonato en un bol grande y lo dejamos a un lado.

En otro bol mezclamos los plátanos aplastados, el huevo y el azúcar.

Añadimos el aceite cucharada a cucharada asegurándonos de que está bien mezclado antes de añadir más.

Añadimos los ingredientes secos a los húmedos mezclando hasta que tengamos una masa uniforme.

Con el horno precalentado a 180º, dejamos que se cocine durante 35 mins. (comprobar que el cuchillo sale limpio)

También hay algo de ciencia primitiva: ¿qué pasa cuando mezclamos materiales secos con sustancias húmedas e interviene el calor….?

I forgot to take a photo as it came out the oven and had already delved in by the time I remembered, it was delicious. 

Como Ruth no tomo una foto a tiempo, pronto desapareció la mitad del pan.  Eso si doy fe que estaba estupendo.
